Frequently Askedf Questions

I saw a 1.75HP version available in the US, is that available in Europe?
No, the 1.75 HP Professional Cabinet Saw (PCS) is currently only available in the United States. In Europe, the SawStop Professional Cabinet Saw is offered with power options that meet local electrical standards, which differ from those in the US. All European models are designed for optimal performance, safety, and compatibility with the region’s power supply.

I saw a different fence available in the US, is that available in Europe?
The fence systems we supply in Europe are different from those in the US because we must comply with European safety regulations (EN standards). In Europe, table saw fences must be designed to reduce the risk of kickback and pinching after the cut. For this reason, the SawStop Professional Cabinet Saw in Europe is equipped with a fence that includes a hi-lo feature and can be adjusted forwards and backwards. This design allows the fence to be set so that it ends before the back of the blade, reducing the chance of timber binding or being caught by the rising rear teeth.

I see the US offers a 30” fence option. Is there a 30” fence option in Europe?
No, in Europe the most popular versions are offered, which are the 36” and 52” T-Glide Advance. We offer additional accessories such as mobile base options as well as a folding outfeed table, which help provide the functionality to maximize the space in your workshop.

Aside from the safety system’s features, what makes SawStop saws better than other saws on the market?
Quality. SawStop saws were designed from the ground up to be the best saws you can buy. Read what customers that use the SawStop cabinet saw every day have to say about its quality and safety system by clicking here.

Your saws include a riving knife. What is a riving knife?
The riving knife is an important safety feature that substantially reduces the chance of kick-back. The riving knife functions similar to a spreader on a blade guard assembly. The difference is that the riving knife does not extend above the top of the blade. Therefore, the riving knife can be used when making non-through cuts and other cuts where the blade guard cannot be used.
Two riving knives are supplied with all SawStop saws, designed to fit either 250mm or 254mm / 10” blades and it’s important to use the correct riving knife with your blade.

Do I need to use a blade guard with a SawStop saw?
Yes. SawStop strongly recommends that you use a blade guard whenever possible.

Can my saw be sold without a fence (body only)?
The saw must be sold as a package due to CE certifications to sell the saw in the UK and Europe.

Can my saw be sold without a dust collection system?
The saw must be sold as a package due to CE certifications to sell the saw in the UK and Europe.

How does the SawStop safety system work?
You can find an explanation of the safety system’s operation as well as watch a brief video of the safety system in action here.

Do I need to be grounded for the safety system to work?
No. The SawStop safety system is designed to activate when the spinning blade contacts your body regardless of whether you are grounded.

How can I be certain the safety system is working?
The SawStop safety system continuously performs many self-checks to ensure the components of the safety system are working properly. The safety system will not allow the motor to start (or to remain running) unless every component of the safety system is working properly.

Can I get a serious injury using a SawStop saw?
In the vast majority of cases, coming in contact with the spinning blade will result in a minor cut. However, if your hand moves into the blade at very high speed, it is possible for you to receive a serious injury.

What happens if the blade comes in contact with a nail or staple in the wood?
Generally, the safety system will not activate when a nail or staple is cut. Although conductive, these objects are not large enough to cause the safety system to activate unless they are grounded to the table or operator when they contact the blade.

But I’ve heard that SawStop saws regularly activate on nails and staples. Is this true?
In earlier SawStop saws, staples and other small pieces of floating metal could occasionally cause unnecessary activations. These activations were caused by the metal debris “bridging” the gap between the spinning blade and the brake cartridge. This issue was addressed (many years ago) by applying a nonconductive transparent film to each brake cartridge’s aluminum face, helping to prevent unwanted “bridging” of the gap. Unwanted activations dropped substantially after this change was implemented.

Will the SawStop Safety System still work when using gloves?
The SawStop safety system will protect you even if you are wearing gloves. In that case, the system will trigger when the blade cuts through the glove and touches your skin. It is possible that the blade could snag on the glove and pull your hand into the blade, resulting in a slightly deeper cut. That is why SawStop recommends not wearing gloves when using a SawStop saw. However, if you decide to wear gloves, you are still protected.

What is the cost if I have an activation?
If you activate the safety system’s brake, you will need to replace the brake cartridge and evaluate the condition of the blade for future use. Replacing the brake cartridge is simple and can take as little as 90 seconds to complete. A standard TSBC-10R3-I brake cartridge costs €89 / £79, and a TSDC-8R3-I dado brake cartridge is €109 / £95. SawStop saws are designed to absorb the force of activation and are not damaged by it.

Can I reuse the blade after an activation?
When the safety system activates, it will sometimes damage one to more teeth on the blade. Some users discard and replace the blade, while others choose to have their blades inspected/repaired by a qualified specialist.

Am I protected during coast down or coasting?
If you are using the grey paddle to turn the blade on/off, the brake is still actively monitoring during the coast down rotation. The grey power switch is what powers the cartridge to begin monitoring the blade, so while that remains on, the cartridge will activate during coast down.

Will cutting green or “wet” wood activate the SawStop safety system?
SawStop saws cut most wet wood without a problem. However, if the wood is very green or wet (for example, wet enough to spray a mist when cutting), or if the wood is both wet and pressure treated, then the wood may be sufficiently conductive to activate the brake. If you are unsure whether the material you need to cut is conductive, you can make test cuts using Bypass Mode to determine if it will activate the safety system’s brake. The red light on the control box will flash to indicate conductivity. If the material is conductive, you can choose to operate the saw in Bypass Mode which will disengage the saw’s safety system’s brake feature and allow you to continue cutting the material.

What if I don’t know if my material is conductive and might activate the brake?
If you are unsure whether the material you need to cut is conductive, you can make test cuts using Bypass Mode to determine if it will activate the safety system’s brake. When in Bypass Mode, if cutting conductive material, the white light on the control box will flash if it detects conductivity. If the material is conductive, you can choose to operate the saw in Bypass Mode which will disengage the saw’s safety system’s brake feature and allow you to continue cutting the material.

Can I retrofit my table saw with SawStop safety technology?
No. It is not economically practical to retrofit other manufacturers’ table saws. The structural changes necessary to incorporate the safety system into another saw and the cost to have it installed would exceed the cost of a new saw. SawStop offers a range of saws designed to meet a variety of performance needs and work environments. From our 15amp Compact Table Saw to the 3 HP Professional Cabinet Saw, SawStop saws are engineered for best-in-class quality and performance while delivering unmatched safety.

Is the SawStop system affected by cold or freezing environments?
Cold ambient temperatures should not affect your saw mechanics. However, your saw’s brake cartridge contains “computer-like” parts that can be affected by extreme cold. If the cartridge is stored in temperatures well below freezing, the saw won’t turn on until the cartridge warms up.  If you are in an extremely cold climate, we recommend removing the cartridge (which you can do with the blade in place) and storing it above freezing. Alternatively, some customers choose to leave the yellow “hard” power switch on all the time. This provides just enough heat to the cartridge to help ensure startup in spite of extreme ambient cold.

Is there a risk of static electricity build up when cutting plastic?
When cutting large amounts of plastic, static electricity can build up causing conductivity. To reduce static electricity, it is recommended that the saw is well grounded using outlets with proper ground wires, proper dust extraction equipment is utilized, and that you perform regular cleaning / maintenance to the saw. You can also use grounded floor mats and anti-static spray to help ensure static build up does not occur. These should help to mitigate any conductivity while cutting plastic.

Do you support 300mm / 12” blades?
SawStop only manufactures 250 or 254mm / 10” table saws.

What about coated blades or coated teeth?
Steel blades and dado sets with a lacquer finish or other coating on the teeth should not be used as the coating may inhibit or slow the speed at which the safety system detects skin contact. However, most coated blades do not cover the blade teeth. Those blades may be used on SawStop saws.

How long does it take to change from a standard brake to a dado brake cartridge?
The brake cartridge is a single unit that requires no tools to insert and remove. It’s easy to change cartridges while you are changing blades, adding virtually no extra time to the task. To see how to change an activated cartridge, Click Here to check out our Video “Replacing Your SawStop Cartridge”

Where are SawStop saws manufactured?
SawStop is a German owned private company based in Tualatin, Oregon. Our saws are engineered in the US and built in Taiwan. Our cartridges are programmed at our Oregon headquarters.  To ensure that our rigorous standards are met, we employ a team of manufacturing engineers in Taiwan who work directly with the manufacturing facilities and key vendors to monitor for quality. The facilities where SawStop saws are assembled are ISO 9001 certified. Our engineers oversee the inspection of component parts prior to final saw assembly, assess assembly procedures for consistency with SawStop requirements, and evaluate final production prior to shipment. Every SawStop saw must pass a 100+ point comprehensive inspection.

What size standard blade works with the Professional Cabinet Saw?
All our saws come with 254mm / 10” blades though work just as well with 250mm if needed. We do have an assortment of high-quality 254mm / 10” blades that are compatible with our saws, which you can find on our web shop at https://sawstop.eu/product-category/accessories/blades/. You can also use other brands of blades, which are 250mm or 254mm / 10” standard-tooth steel blade with steel or carbide teeth. We recommend against the use of blades with tooth “shoulders” (often called depth-limiting or anti-kickback shoulders), as these blades will take longer to stop in the event of an accident.
Do not use blades with non-conductive hubs or teeth, as the safety system will not allow the saw to operate with these blades installed.

What Dado Stack works with the Professional Cabinet Saw?
We do manufacturer an 203mm / 8” Premium Dado Set, which you can find on our on our web shop at https://sawstop.eu/product-category/accessories/blades/ . You can also use other brands of dado sets given it’s an 8” standard-tooth steel stacked dado set (max width: 23mm or 29/32”) with steel or carbide teeth. A zero-clearance insert for your dado set must also be purchased along with the required Dado Cartridge.
Do not use dado sets with solid-plate interior chippers or blades with molding heads. We recommend against using “wobble” dado sets as the brake cartridge is not designed to stop those blade types. We also do not recommend using blades with tooth “shoulders” (often called depth-limiting or anti-kickback shoulders), as these blades will take longer to stop in the event of an accident.
Additionally, we recommend only using dado sets wherein the interior chippers have between two and four teeth per chipper to limit the impact of the saw during activation.

Aren’t dado stacks illegal in Europe?
It’s a common misconception that dado stacks are illegal in Europe. What is true is that most European saws are not designed to safely accommodate them due to arbor length, guarding, and dust collection regulations. The SawStop Professional Cabinet Saw, however, has been specifically engineered and CE-certified for use with an optional dado brake cartridge and dado insert. This, in combination with our floating guard, allows you to use dado stacks safely and in compliance with European safety standards.

Can I use thin and thick kerf 250mm or 254mm / 10″ blades with a SawStop saw?
The SawStop safety system is designed for use with standard 250 or 254mm / 10” blades with kerfs from 2.4 mm to 4.8 mm (or 3/32” to 3/16”). Blades with kerfs much thinner than 2.4mm (3/32”) should not be used because those blades might not be strong enough to withstand the force applied by the brake when it activates. As a result, those blades might deform and stop more slowly in the event of an accident, resulting in a more serious injury.
Blades with kerfs much thicker than 4.8mm (3/16”) are heavier than standard 3.2mm (1/8”) kerf blades. Therefore, those blades should not be used because they may stop more slowly than standard blades in the event of an accident, resulting in a more serious injury.

Similarly, stacks of 2 or more 250mm or 254mm/10” blades should never be used on your SawStop saw as the combined weight of the blades may be too heavy to stop quickly. If you need to use a blade with a kerf thicker than 4.8mm (3/16”), use an 8” (203mm) dado set with the optional SawStop 8” dado cartridge. The dado cartridge is designed for use with 8” (203mm) dado sets up to 23mm (29/32”) wide and is CE-certified for safe use on the Professional Cabinet Saw.

Do any of your saws have scoring blades?
We do not have a scoring blade on any of our saws. Scoring blades cannot be used with our saws due to the stopping technology.

What plug/connection does the European PCS use?
The European Professional Cabinet Saw comes equipped with a 16A CEE plug, which is a standard connection commonly used for workshop machinery across Europe. This plug type provides a safe, reliable connection for high-powered tools and ensures compatibility with typical workshop circuits. Using a 16A CEE plug helps maintain consistent performance and adheres to local electrical safety standards, giving you both power and peace of mind when operating your saw.

What is the flatness of your table top on the PCS?
The flatness specification for the cast iron table is 0.2mm in any direction.

Do you have a router table available for my PCS?
Not yet, please sign up for email updates so you can know when this offering is available, should it come available in the future.

Do you offer a mobile base for your Professional Cabinet saw?
Yes, we do offer optional mobile bases for the Professional Cabinet saw. The first is called the Professional Integrated Mobile Base, which is part number MB-PCS-000-I. The second is called the Industrial Mobile Base w/ PCS Conversion Kit, which is part number MB-PCS-IND-I.

What’s the difference between the Professional Integrated Mobile Base (MB-PCS-000-I) and the Industrial Mobile Base (MB-PCS-IND-I)?
The Industrial Mobile Base has 4 casters that spin, making it simple to move in any direction. It is also rated up to 400kg / 1000 lb. and therefore compatible with our larger accessories such as the Floating Dust Guard or the Sliding Crosscut Table.

The Integrated Mobile Base has only 2 casters that spin, and 2 fixed wheels, similar to a shopping cart.  It’s a great solution for moving the Professional Cabinet Saw in any of its more standard configuration set ups.

What is the Base – Height of Saw?
The PCS is 34” (864mm) high. The Professional saw integrated mobile base does not change the height of the saw as it bolts to the cabinet and only lifts the saw when it’s going to be rolled around – this lift is about ½”.  The Industrial base can be used with an adapter kit, this does raise the saw slightly as it rests on a steel bar ¼” thick. Again, when lifted, it raises the saw an additional ½” to roll it around and then rests back down on that bar.

What type of motors come on your saws?
The Professional Cabinet Saw uses an induction motor for maximum durability and power delivery. Our Jobsite Saw features a universal motor for weight savings. Our Compact Table saw has a universal, direct drive motor.

Can I use a generator to run a SawStop saw?
We do not recommend operating SawStop saws on a generator, as we cannot say whether or not a given generator will damage the saw. It is possible to run a SawStop saw on any generator as long as that generator’s output is equivalent to utility power (voltage level, low electrical noise, surge capacity, etc), but verifying this output is entirely dependent on the customer’s technical capability.
